Awaz Sayeed’s Short Stories
Story Overview:
The story centres on a man who, instead of attending a friend’s funeral with the rest of the community, remains isolated in his house, caught in a restless state between sleep and wakefulness. Despite repeated urgings from his companion to join the funeral procession, he insists he will only participate if the funeral passes by his road, revealing a peculiar detachment from the world around him. As the day unfolds, he encounters strange, recurring figures and witnesses a surreal, endless stream of funeral processions, deepening his confusion and sense of alienation.
Gradually, the boundaries between reality and illusion blur: time loses meaning, his house inexplicably displays a “TO LET” sign, and he cannot recall simple conversations. In the end, he and two similarly bewildered men realise they are all waiting for a funeral that never arrives on their road. Overcome by grief and confusion, they embrace and weep, symbolising the universal human struggle to comprehend loss, mortality, and the search for meaning in the face of death.
