Abstract:

In “Teesra Mujasamma – Afsana Nigar Awaz Sayeed Ka Fan,” renowned writer Iqbal Mateen offers a deeply personal and reflective essay on his friend and contemporary, Awaz Sayeed, focusing on both the challenges and privileges of writing about a literary figure he admires. Mateen candidly describes his internal struggle to do justice to Sayeed’s artistry and character, emphasising the sincerity and loyalty that define Sayeed both as a person and as a writer. He recounts their early, somewhat reserved encounters, gradually revealing Sayeed’s complex personality—one marked by humility, patience, and a quiet, steadfast devotion to friends and family.
Mateen draws vivid comparisons, suggesting that if the word “faith” were replaced in Urdu poetry, the essence of Awaz Sayeed’s unwavering loyalty would come to the fore. He highlights Sayeed’s exemplary roles as a husband, father, and friend, noting his complete commitment once he forms a bond. The essay also situates Sayeed among the prominent short story writers of Hyderabad, alongside names like Jilani Bayano, Urj Saeed, and Wajida Tabassum, whose works were celebrated in both India and Pakistan.

Stylistically, Mateen praises Sayeed’s storytelling craft and language, which serve as a refined mirror for his characters, each one carefully constructed and emotionally resonant. Despite his literary stature, Sayeed remains unpretentious, often shying away from public attention and preferring the company of close friends and family. The narrative is interspersed with anecdotes that illustrate Sayeed’s modesty, sense of humour, and the subtle ways in which he leaves a lasting impression on those around him.

Overall, Mateen’s essay is both a tribute and an intimate portrait, capturing the essence of Awaz Sayeed’s art and humanity and reflecting on the profound impact of his friendship and literary contributions.
